Originally introduced in 2019 and since then adopted as a global initiative by all Peninsula hotels, Art in Resonance offers Peninsula guests deeply immersive experiences that promote the rich and vibrant cultural aspects of the cities in which they reside. Designed to support both established and emerging artists, Art in Resonance is grounded in the recognition of art’s value for humanity, as an inclusive and universal language that crosses borders and builds connections.
On May 21, 2024, Philippine National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera + Moooi Carpets will unveil eight site-specific tapestries that he created for The Lobby. The tapestries are based on Sabel, his acclaimed solitary figure of a scavenger emerging from a dark landscape, and on his Larawan paintings, inspired by turn-of-the-century Philippine photographs and borne out of his nostalgia for Filipino culture while living in London.

The tapestries – Sette Movementi, Triptych on Sabel 2 and Triptych on Sabel 3, Noong Bata pa si Sabel, Farm Boy, Isadora’s Dance, and Three Muses – form one of the largest groups of tapestries the artist has ever created. Presented in partnership with Abitare Internazionale, eight paintings by BenCab have been transformed into “tapestry art” by Dutch design trailblazers Moooi Carpets using cutting-edge digital technology that captures the colors, textures, tones, and volume of BenCab’s work in their most minute detail.
The tapestries will be on view at The Lobby of The Peninsula Manila until July 21, 2024. For the duration of the exhibition, the hotel will offer visitors free access to all pieces, and, for suite guests, guided tours and other activities.
In tandem with the exhibition, The Peninsula Manila will also offer guests a special BenCab ARt in Resonance Afternoon Tea menu inspired by the artist's tapestries. It will be available at The Lobby of The Peninsula Manila from May 22 to June 23, 2024. The BenCab Art in Resonance Afternoon Tea is available at P2,888 per set and P4,300 with a flute of Champagne.
At The Conservatory on June 23, 2024, the hotel will have its first “Art in Resonance TALKS: BenCab in Conversation with Ambeth Ocampo.” An eminent historian, popular newspaper columnist, and friend of the artist, Ambeth Ocampo will join BenCab to talk about his search for a Filipino identity and the social and cultural context behind his work.
